A driver, not a guide: read before booking

I’ll say this upfront because the reviews say it too. Mario, who gave four out of five stars, sums it up: “Excellent driver, I wouldn’t call him a guide, but he got us there safely and on time.” Bradley mentions Tarik, professional and comfortable in English; Susanne describes Tarek and seamless communication; Sally talks about her best day with Rohid. What you’re paying for is the drive along the mountain road, parking, the castle ticket, and the freedom to set your own schedule. Inside the castle, you follow the audio guide or a guided tour in French offered by the monument, just like any other visitor. If you want someone to tell you about Bodo Ebhardt and Wilhelm II as you climb to the keep, the guided day trip in a minivan is what you need.

The itinerary

The driver picks you up from your Strasbourg hotel at the agreed time. The castle comes first, after 55 km on the motorway followed by the winding climb from Orschwiller or Kintzheim. You’ll have one hour on site—enough to explore the interior circuit (lower courtyard, drawbridge, lodgings, banqueting hall, armory, Kaiser’s hall, bastion) if you don’t linger in the medieval garden. Then Riquewihr for an hour, where most people have lunch. Then Colmar for 2.5 hours: enough time for Petite Venice, the Pfister House, and a coffee. You’ll return to Strasbourg, or stay in Colmar if that’s where your evening hotel is.

When the private option beats the 8-seater van

With young children. The castle doesn’t allow strollers inside (baby carriers recommended, unsupervised storage at the ticket office), and a tired child in a shared van with six strangers makes the day long for everyone. Here, you leave when you decide. Christine describes “storybook places” and a helpful driver: it was a day with breathing room.

With a tight schedule. A train to catch later in the day, an evening reservation, a Rhine cruise. The shared van runs on its own schedule. The private vehicle adapts to yours, within a six- to seven-hour limit.

To change cities. This is the only departure from Strasbourg that drops you off in Colmar. Mind the luggage rule: large suitcases won’t fit. One bag per person is fine; a checked-size suitcase isn’t. If you’re moving hotels with bulky luggage, send it by train or keep one more night in Strasbourg.

For four people. Two couples, or parents with two teenagers, fill the vehicle. No waiting for others in Riquewihr, just one conversation with the driver to adjust lunch plans, and castle admission pre-paid for everyone.

From Basel, for visitors from Switzerland

There’s no private option from Basel, but a minibus with a driver-guide leaves from the coach parking near the Tinguely Fountain at 9 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Three hours in Colmar, 1 hour 15 minutes at the castle with admission included, 1.5 hours in Ribeauvillé with an optional tasting, brochures, and commentary in English and German. What the private option doesn’t change

The castle remains the castle: 300 steps, cool rooms, and a view that depends on the weather. It’s still inaccessible to wheelchairs beyond the ground floor, whether you’re in a private vehicle or not. And it closes on January 1st and December 25th and 26th, with shorter hours in winter.
