The route is one-way with no shortcuts: one hour is enough to see everything without rushing, an hour and a quarter if you linger on the bastion. Add the 300 m walk from the car park, ticketing, the gift shop, and a coffee at the car park restaurant, and you’ll easily spend two hours. The 300 steps don’t extend the visit, but they do make it more tiring. With six-year-olds, plan for the same time—they’ll outpace you on the spiral staircases.

Half-day or full day?

By car from Colmar—just 26 km—the castle alone fits neatly into a morning: leave at 9 a.m. and return in time for lunch. From Strasbourg, 55 km away, a half-day is tight but doable.
