The guided minivan day tour – my top recommendation
Meet in front of the tourist office, 17 Cathedral Square. Up to eight people in a recent minivan, with an English-speaking driver-guide. The itinerary runs south to north: a two-hour guided tour of Colmar (Pfister House, Koïfhus, St Martin’s Collegiate Church, Little Venice, then free time), Riquewihr with a half-hour introduction and an hour free for lunch, a drive along the Wine Route, and the castle in the late afternoon for a 1 hr 30 min guided visit. Back in Strasbourg after eight hours.
I like this order. The castle last means the coaches have already left, the car park is clearing, and the afternoon light falls across the plain. The shared van with driver: what you’re really buying
Departure at 1 rue Mercière, a stone’s throw from the cathedral. Seven hours, eight seats per van (four in a sedan), a professional driver, water and sweets on board, an audio guide in English and Spanish. The order is reversed compared to the guided day tour: the castle first (one hour), then Riquewihr (one hour for lunch), followed by 2 hrs 30 min in Colmar before the return.
You need to read the description for what it is. The driver is not a guide, the castle ticket is not included (you buy it from him on the day) and you explore on your own. The 4.4 rating tells two stories: Eddy and Sandra describe Julie as attentive and funny, Christi mentions Julia, Elizabeth discovered Bartholdi’s house in Colmar during her free time thanks to Smail; others were expecting commentary that never came. The private excursion: four seats, your hotel as the starting point
Same loop as the shared van (castle 1 hr, Riquewihr 1 hr, Colmar 2 hrs 30 min), but the vehicle is yours. Pickup at your Strasbourg hotel, drop-off in Strasbourg or Colmar if you’re moving on that evening, castle entry included, audio guide, driver who speaks English, French or Spanish. The castle is the one stop where timing really matters. In the morning, you’ll run into school groups and the first coaches; by late afternoon, the rooms are empty. If you choose an option that starts at the castle, book the earliest date possible during the week, avoiding weekends.
No excursion: the train and bus 500 from Strasbourg
This is the route from my childhood. A TER train from Strasbourg to Sélestat, then the shuttle 500 that climbs up to the castle from the station. It only runs in season, roughly from March to December, and the bus ticket gives you a discount on the castle entrance. Still, allow a full day: the connections, the 300 m dirt path from the car park, and two hours on site. You won’t have time for Riquewihr or Colmar that day, unless you take the train again in the afternoon. By car, it’s the A35, exits 17 or 18, and a free car park with around 150 spaces that fills up early in July and August.
