What to see around Haut-Koenigsbourg: castles, villages and wildlife

Without children, head down to Ribeauvillé or Riquewihr, fifteen minutes away, or to Sélestat for the Humanist Library, which hurried visitors often overlook. For those who find Haut-Koenigsbourg too restored, Alsace has just the ruins. Ortenbourg, visible from the main bastion, is within walking distance; Frankenbourg is above Neubois; Ribeauvillé has its three castles—Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre—linked by a hiking loop. Further away, Fleckenstein to the north, Lichtenberg, Haut-Andlau and Hohlandsbourg above Colmar each require half a day.
