What to see around Haut-Koenigsbourg: castles, villages and wildlife

Less than fifteen minutes away: the Monkey Mountain and the Eagle Aviary in Kintzheim, Sélestat with its Humanist Library, and the villages along the Wine Route (Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Hunawihr, then Kaysersberg and Eguisheim towards Colmar). For other castles: Ortenbourg, visible from the bastion, Frankenbourg, the three castles of Ribeauvillé, and further afield Fleckenstein, Lichtenberg, Haut-Andlau and Hohlandsbourg.

With children, the tried-and-tested combination is the castle in the morning and either Monkey Mountain or the Eagle Aviary in the afternoon—both in Kintzheim, just down the road. Without children, head down to Ribeauvillé or Riquewihr, fifteen minutes away, or to Sélestat for the Humanist Library, which hurried visitors often overlook. The typical itinerary is on our how much time to allow page.

For those who find Haut-Koenigsbourg too restored, Alsace has just the ruins. Ortenbourg, visible from the main bastion, is within walking distance; Frankenbourg is above Neubois; Ribeauvillé has its three castles—Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre—linked by a hiking loop. Further away, Fleckenstein to the north, Lichtenberg, Haut-Andlau and Hohlandsbourg above Colmar each require half a day. Our excursions don’t include these ruins; instead, they pair the castle with villages, as explained on our Wine Route page.

Insider tip

The departure from Basel is the only one that stops in Ribeauvillé, with an optional guided walk and tasting; from Colmar, it’s Eguisheim and Kaysersberg.

Castle and Ribeauvillé in one day

The Basel departure combines Colmar, the castle (ticket included) and Ribeauvillé with a driver-guide.
