When is the best time to visit Haut-Koenigsbourg?

From May to September for the light and long opening hours, mornings at opening time to avoid the coaches. July-August and the weeks of the Christmas markets are the busiest. Winter has shorter hours and a midday closure in November-December, but admission is free on the first Sunday of the month from November to March, and the clear air offers views all the way to the Alps.

My personal order of preference: a June morning, an October morning for the hillside colours, a January Sunday in freezing weather for the panoramic views. The worst: a Saturday in August at 2 p.m., or a December Saturday when all of Strasbourg combines the Christmas market with a castle visit. During those weeks, the eight-seater minivans for tours are fully booked days in advance—telling you all you need to know about the crowds up there.

Winter has a special appeal: the castle organises torchlit evening tours on certain dates, bookable directly with the castle. Check the castle’s official website for dates—I don’t publish them. Bus 500 from Sélestat doesn’t run in deep winter. From January to February, without a car, a guided tour is the only sensible option.
